Coatlalopeuh (The Virgin of Guadalupe) Character Analysis

The Virgin of Guadalupe, an image of the Virgin Mary that appeared to an Indigenous peasant named Juan Diego around the time of the Spanish conquest of Mexico, has since become the most famous symbol of Mexican national, cultural, and religious identity. Even though Anzaldúa considers the Virgin one of Chicanas’ three mothers (along with La Malinche and La Llorona), she also analyzes how the Catholic Church has used the Virgin’s image and story to oppress women. Anzaldúa proposes re-linking the Virgin to her original native identity, Coatlalopeuh, which descends from the creator goddess Coatlicue.
