In Borderlands / La Frontera, a book of seven essays and three dozen poems, Chicana feminist scholar Gloria Anzaldúa explores what it means to live on and across borders of all sorts. While she focuses on the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands, where her family has lived for six generations, she also emphasizes the way she straddles other cultural and psychological borders—like male and female, the English and Spanish languages, the self and the other, life and death, and the Anglo, Hispanic, and Indigenous cultures that meet at the border.

People who habitually cross such boundaries, like Anzaldúa, tend to face an internal “struggle of borders.” They are forced to choose one side or the other, then negate the part of themselves that doesn’t fit on that side. They often face rejection from both sides, too—for instance, both Anglo-Americans and native-born Mexicans look down on Chicano Spanish, whose speakers are left feeling they belong nowhere. Yet border-crossers’ struggle to the define the self is also a blessing in disguise. They understand the violence of borders like nobody else, they tolerate ambiguity well, and they learn to see the same situation from multiple angles by balancing different languages, value systems, and habits of mind. They can heal the contradictions in their mind through the painful but generative mindset that Anzaldúa calls the Coatlicue state, and over time, they can even reclaim and rewrite their own life stories. Anzaldúa ultimately argues that, by refashioning ourselves in this way, we can reshape the world and take an “evolutionary step forward.” In fact, she presents her own journey to appreciating the varied aspects of her mestiza identity as a roadmap for how societies can learn to embrace their growing diversity.

The U.S.-Mexican border es una herida abierta where the Third World grates against the first and bleeds. La facultad is the capacity to see in surface phenomena the meaning of deeper realities, to see the deep structure below the surface. It is an instant “sensing,” a quick perception arrived at without conscious reasoning. It is an acute awareness mediated by the part of the psyche that does not speak, that communicates in images and symbols which are the faces of feelings, that is, behind which feelings reside/hide. There is another quality to the mirror and that is the act of seeing. Seeing and being seen. Subject and object, I and she. The eye pins down the object of its gaze, scrutinizes it, judges it. A glance can freeze us in place; it can “possess” us. It can erect a barrier against the world. But in a glance also lies awareness, knowledge. These seemingly contradictory aspects—the act of being seen, held immobilized by a glance, and “seeing through” an experience—are symbolized by the underground aspects of Coatlicue, Cihuacoatl, and Tlazolteotl which cluster in what I call the Coatlicue state.

Because the future depends on the breaking down of paradigms, it depends on the straddling of two or more cultures. By creating a new mythos—that is, a change in the way we perceive reality, the way we see ourselves, and the ways we behave—la mestiza creates a new consciousness.
