Craig doesn’t get much sleep that night as his thoughts race over all his problems. Eventually he feels Mom get into bed. He waits for her to fall asleep, then he thinks through his plan to go to the Brooklyn Bridge. He wonders whether or not to lock his bike before he jumps. He puts off going for a long time, then eventually gets up at 5:07 a.m. He remembers hearing about suicide hotlines and decides to call one.
Although this passage is arguably the darkest moment of the book, it still has moments of humor, as Craig can’t help thinking about little details like what will happen to his bike after he’s gone. His decision to call the suicide hotline is a turning point for his character and an admission that he can’t solve his problems on his own, the way he thought he could when he stopped taking his medication.
