Analysis
Though people predicted that 2012 would mark the end of the world, their theories of floods and viruses were inaccurate: the end of the world happened in a beautiful park on a hot day.
There’s something discordant about the idea of the apocalypse happening in good weather and in a calm setting. That discordance reflects the confusion Machado feels in her relationship—she feels at once the need to escape and the compulsion to remain with her abuser.
