In the Dream House: 6. Dream House as an Exercise in Point of View Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
Machado sees herself as an “I” and a “you,” two beings who were once codependent, then split apart at a particular point in time. “I” was the more confident half of her, who “left, then lived,” learning how to cook and make cocktails and care for plants, while “you” was the anxious other half who produced bad stories for the second half of her creative writing degree and retreated from social events. Machado thought that the “you” half of her had died, but now that she’s writing her story, she doubts that.
Machado uses grammar to understand how she has transformed. This emphasizes her literary background; above all, she’s a writer. However, as this chapter reveals, she contains many different characteristics, and there’s clearly been an event that split her bold, joy-seeking side from the part of her that’s riddled with anxiety and fear.
