Though Nick is a die-hard Arsenal fan, his father is a Chelsea fan. This seems fitting—whereas Chelsea fans tend to be affluent and fashionable, Arsenal is based in a lower-class part of London. Nick’s dad has become wealthier over the past few years, and he dresses very stylishly. Nick also notes that both Chelsea football club and his father are unreliable. As Nick’s dad becomes more interested in the lifestyle of the wealthier side of London, Nick becomes more interested in London’s poorer subculture.
Nick places a high importance on which football club a person chooses to support because he sees football as a vital part of identity. Nick identifies closely with the lower-class Arsenal fanbase even though he’s actually from an affluent area. This may be a way for Nick to try to differentiate himself from his father.
