Nick feels guilty for dragging his father into his Nick’s own obsession with Arsenal. His dad doesn’t have a personal affinity for the team, but he goes to the games for Nick’s sake. Arsenal is known for being a boring team, and Nick knows that it’s true—most of their games are low-scoring and uneventful. Despite his guilt, Nick is unable to abandon his loyalty to the team. He considers that being a fan of a team is a relationship unlike marriage in that whereas one can never become a fan of a different team, a divorcee can find a new partner.
Nick’s ideas about loyalty in football suggest a deep link between his obsession with Arsenal and his parents’ separation. Perhaps he remains so fiercely loyal to Arsenal as a sort of replacement or answer to the lack of loyalty in his parents’ marriage.
