Usha’s Father
Amit Sarkar is the protagonist of “A Choice of Accommodations.” He’s married to Megan, and together, they attend the New England wedding of his former high school and college crush, Pam Borden. Amit is introspective and wistful, haunted by feelings of inadequacy that have lingered since his time at Langford Academy, the prestigious boarding school where he was the only Indian student. He and Megan have two young daughters, Monika and Maya, and he watches them part-time while he works as an editor for a medical journal. Megan, a doctor, is often away, having continued her medical education after Amit chose to drop out of med school. Despite his love for his family, Amit struggles with a midlife crisis, feeling increasingly dissatisfied and restless. He ultimately drinks too much at the wedding, abandoning Megan and passing out alone in their hotel room. This conflict prompts him to reflect on the choices he’s made and decide whether the western life he has created is still enough for him.
