Henrik Character Analysis

Henrik is a Swedish man whom Kaushik meets in a resort near Thailand before his move to Hong Kong in “Going Ashore.” A sympathetic figure, Henrik senses Kaushik’s loneliness and strikes up a conversation with him. His family’s warmth and openness confront Kaushik with the kind of connection he wishes he could sustain with others. In a bid to be more open, Kaushik joins Henrik on a boat ride to explore nearby coral reefs. Ultimately, it is on this excursion that Kaushik—and presumably Henrik—dies, tragically killed by the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004.
