Ruma’s Mother Character Analysis

Though she has already passed away before the story begins, Ruma’s mother is a strong, compassionate presence in both Ruma’s memory and in “Unaccustomed Earth.” She represents Ruma and Ruma’s father’s link to their Bengali heritage, as she was the family member who actively upheld Bengali traditions and tried to instill a sense of cultural pride in her children. Ruma recalls her mother as a protective figure who encouraged family unity but was often somewhat confined by the expectations of her prescribed role. While her absence creates a void for Ruma—who misses her guidance and regrets not connecting with her more as an adult—it also allows Ruma’s father the freedom to embrace a western lifestyle he couldn’t fully explore while she was alive.

There had been a time in her life when such presumptuousness would have angered Ruma. She missed it now.
