Unaccustomed Earth

by

Jhumpa Lahiri

Farouk is Sang’s boyfriend of three years in “Nobody’s Business.” He’s an Egyptian professor of Middle Eastern history at Harvard. He displays controlling tendencies, keeping his distance from Sang’s close friends and avoiding permanent commitments. Despite Sang’s affections for him, he is manipulative and dishonest, often leaving her questioning his loyalty and her own sanity. Farouk exhibits abusive, narcissistic indifference that causes emotional harm to Sang, whom he uses while secretly pursuing other women, like Deirdre. When Paul becomes involved in Farouk and Sang’s relationship, Farouk becomes increasingly aggressive and threatening, and the two men eventually come to blows. Sang ultimately ends their relationship.
