Many Americans consider Orchard to be an expert on indigenous practices, so Latour consults him after he travels with Jacinto to the Pecos’s sacred cave. Ultimately, however, Orchard’s knowledge proves inconclusive; mostly, he just warns Latour that indigenous religious practices will not ever be erased by Catholicism.
