Lakota Woman

by

Mary Crow Dog

Dennis Banks, an Ojibwe man, was one of the co-founders of the American Indian Movement (AIM). He participated in both the Trail of Broken Treaties and the Occupation of Wounded Knee. Although he said that “AIM was against violence,” he did not hesitate to defend himself and his people. He is an example of someone who chose activism over passivity. With his activism, Dennis Banks created meaningful change in the fight for Native American civil rights.
